Certificate of insurance

A certificate of insurance, or COI, is a document that summarizes your active insurance policies, limits, dates, and certificate holder information.

Why this shows up

Clients ask for a COI because they want proof of coverage before work starts, but the certificate is not the full policy.

What this changes for you

This usually creates a document workflow. You need the certificate holder, required policies, limits, due date, and any special wording before your broker can issue the right certificate.

What to check first

  • Who should be listed as certificate holder?
  • Which policies and limits must appear?
  • Does the client require special wording or endorsements?

Example contract wording

Vendor shall provide a certificate of insurance prior to commencement of services.

What to do next

  • Copy the certificate holder name and address exactly.
  • List the policies and limits the client wants shown.
  • Ask your broker whether any requested wording needs carrier approval.

Questions to ask

  • Can you issue this certificate today?
  • Can the requested wording appear on the certificate?
  • Do any endorsements need to be added first?

Common mistake

Sending an old or generic certificate that does not match the client's wording, holder name, or required limits.
